MECO EP Type-2

Reliable Elastomer Driven Performance

The MECO EP Type-2 model is a double mechanical seal well suited for applications at low to moderate speeds and for a variety of shaft sizes. Using full-contact, soft-face mechanical sealing technology, this seal operates without the need for a fluid barrier between the seal faces. Providing superior performance, high durability, and quality workmanship, the EP Type-2 is an ideal candidate for sealing machinery in vacuum, steady-state, and infrequent thermal expansion service.

Details

Description

+

An ideal sealing solution for single or twin-shafted extruder-compounders, plow blenders, paddle blenders, conveyors, and other similar rotating equipment, the EP Type-2 has been used in the plastic, chemical, metal, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The seal is frequently used for service on polymer extruders that must contain particulates and vapors within the process vessel.

The EP Type-2 is appropriate for vacuum service, low pressure, and steady-state applications that experience infrequent thermal expansion or pressure fluctuations. It has been implemented on horizontal, inclined, and vertical shafted machines. Designed fully-split, the EP Type-2 model is able to be installed and maintained without the removal of steady bearings or drives.

How it works

+

Featuring a precision-machined split seal housing and gland follower, akin to a stuffing box, the EP Type-2 seal operates with an elastomer drive frictionally locked to the shaft. This drive elastomer forms an air and watertight seal at the shaft when interlocked with a pair of low-friction rotating seal faces (rotors). Rotating seal components are installed around the shaft prior to installation of the seal housing.

With sealing planes at right angles to the shaft, the rotors remain in full-contact with the stationary seal faces (stators) through the use of external load springs that provide reactive seal face loading. An air or inert gas purge is introduced to the seal cavity through a port in the housing, supplying the seal with pneumatic seal face loading and a method for evacuating debris from the seal cavity.

Maintenance

+

Included with each EP Type-2 seal are a gas regulator and pressure gauge to monitor and control the supply of purge gas to the seal cavity. This provides maintenance and production personnel with an effective diagnostic tool for seal performance and maintenance so that adjustments or repairs can be made before product leakage occurs.

As the sacrificial wear items in the seal degrade over time, seal face loading is maintained by the seal’s external load springs which compensate for wear by expanding. Once a significant drop in cavity pressure is observed or the opportunity presents itself, springs should be reset to encourage maximum life span of the seal. When seal cavity pressure can no longer be maintained by the springs or spring loading has been reset as much as possible, the rotating seal face assembly may be replaced with fully-split components in a rebuild kit, eliminating the need for removal of drives or bearings.

Construction

+

Standard configuration of the EP Type-2 model seal uses stainless-steel stationary seal faces (typically 300 series or 17-4 stainless steel), which may be integral to the seal’s housing or replaceable. If replaceable stators are incorporated into the design, the housing and gland follower are often constructed of aluminum in the interest of heat dissipation, however stainless steels or other corrosion-resistant alloys are available.

Rotors and elastomers are selected from a variety of bearing-grade polymers and rubbers, with many food-grade materials available.
