MECO HH Type-2

Simply Effective Sealing

The MECO HH Type-2 is a fully custom, air-purged mechanical shaft seal. It can be quickly adjusted without disassembly of the seal by tightening the simple adjusting clamp through an access port. Unlike standard stuffing box seals, the HH Type-2 is non-abrasive to the machine’s shaft and can accommodate shaft runout. Available with entirely split components, this seal can be installed and maintained efficiently without the need to remove bearings or drives.

Details

Description

+

Often used in applications with moderate process temperatures, the HH Type-2 is also a strong choice when sealing abrasive products. It is best suited for applications that experience infrequent or no thermal expansion, and is applicable for horizontal, inclined, and vertical shafts.

Common machines where the HH Type-2 has been implemented are dryers, blenders, and mixers used in industries such as battery salt manufacturing, sugar and granular material blending, and chocolate mixing.

How it works

+

The dynamic seal of the HH Type-2 is formed by two rotating polymer seal faces (rotors) that interface with two stationary stainless-steel seal faces (stators). Rotors are frictionally locked in rotation with the machine’s shaft by an elastomer drive ring outfitted with an adjustment clamp. When the clamp is tightened, it squeezes the elastomer against the shaft to discourage slippage, as well as lengthen the elastomer axially against the rotors to provide effective and adjustable seal face loading.

The HH Type-2 is also pneumatically loaded with a compressed gas (air or inert gas), which augments the seal face loading from the adjustment clamp and also acts to clear the seal faces of product material and debris. The use of a gas purge also creates a pressure differential, further isolating the process from the ambient atmosphere.

Maintenance

+

Sealing performance and installation integrity are easily monitored and confirmed by the seal’s pressure gauge system. Maintenance and production personnel can be alerted of a potential seal breach by observing trends of the seal cavity pressure and making adjustments or repairs before product leakage occurs.

As natural wear of the seal’s sacrificial elements takes place and a decrease in cavity pressure is observed, seal face pressure can be restored by tightening the adjusting clamp which is easily accessible through a port in the seal’s housing. If the seal’s components are worn further than can be compensated by adjusting the clamp, split rebuild kits are available for wear items.

Construction

+

The HH Type-2 seal is available in a variety of materials, dictated by the needs of your application. Typical housing construction uses 300 series or 17-4 stainless-steel with integral stators. Rotors and elastomers are selected from a variety of bearing-grade polymers and rubbers, with many food-grade materials available.

Sizing Chart

Dimensions will vary according to each application, but typical spatial dimensions with respect to the shaft diameter are illustrated in the chart below. Seals are not forced to fit your equipment, but designed specifically for your equipment.
